 Textured symbols, real objects or parts of objects can be used with very young children and those who have visual impairments, severe cognitive impairments and language impairments.

Textured “Name Symbols" become meaningful and provide individuals with a sense of self.  Use of textured  Name Symbols” allow young children to access language.

When students identify with their textured name symbol, they can claim ownership, make requests, comment on a personal level etc..

Textured name symbols can be placed on low tech displays, switches and AAC devices, cubbies, chair, table setting, job charts, attendance charts and so on.

As a team, brainstorm various textures that would allow the student to relate best to the selected texture.  Find a texture that would be the most relevant for the student.
