Twister: making adaptations
How to Adapt Your Child’s Game
Twister
Materials: Twister game
Four different types of textured/colored materials *
- Green (felt)
- Blue (corduroy/jean material)
- Red (fuzzy material)
- Yellow (foam)
Piece of cardboard or cardstock
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Procedure:
1. Using the cardboard or cardstock, create a stencil of the large circles from the play mat as well as a stencil for the small circles on the spinner.
2. Using the stencils, cut out the circles from the material. You should have enough green to cover all the green circles, enough red to cover all the red circles, etc. until both the board and the spinner have been covered.
3. Using the hot glue gun, glue the circles on to the corresponding circles on the board and spinner.
Ways to Use/Play the Game:
1. Have your child lie on the mat or put the mat in their lap. Have them feel the different textures on the mat. Discuss what they feel like, how they are different, or how they are similar.
2. Have your child begin to identify the textures or colors on the mat. See if they can point to the texture/color that you label (point to green felt circle).
3. Have your child begin to learn the concept of the game by having them practice placing their correct hands or feet on the correct circles on the mat.
4. Play the game with some other children or other adults. Help your child as you are playing to put their body parts on the correct circles.
*The material can be what you choose the above are just examples.
