Freezing vs. Melting Solid/Liquid/Gas Lesson
Science
III. Cognition and General Knowledge
B. Scientific Thinking
1. Use scientific thinking as well as his senses to discover the world around him, and make comparisons between objects
Activity:
- Students will explore the properties of freezing and melting, as well as solid, liquid and gas by using the following materials and completing the following activities:
- Ice cubes and water in containers – explore freezing and melting properties by leaving ice out of the freezer and placing a container of water into the freezer and observing what happens. Also, discuss that frozen items are solid and melted items are liquid. While learning about freezing and melting, use the tactile APH thermometer to discuss the temperature at which these processes take place.
- Frozen and non-frozen freeze pops – explore the properties of solids and liquids.
- Colored water in a clear soda bottle (with the top cut off) and Wikki sticks – explore the process of evaporation throughout the week. Using Wikki sticks for texture, mark the water level on the outside of the soda bottle each day. Explain that the water level is getting lower because it is evaporating into a gas.
- Kool-Aid mix, water, pitcher, clear cups, craft sticks, freezer, etc. – investigate if water mixed with a drink mix will change properties. Make the Kool-Aid, pour it into cups labeled with students’ names and have the students place craft sticks in his or her cup. Predict how long it will take the Kool-Aid to change properties. Place the cups in the freezer and check on them periodically. When frozen, enjoy the treat!
