Comparing Apples and Pumpkins
Objective: Seek information through observation, exploration, and descriptive investigations with simple science tools
Materials
apples, pumpkins
plastic knives
cutting board or surface
trays or bowls
optional: items made from apples and pumpkins (pie, juice or cider)
Activity:
Students will explore and describe both pumpkins and apples. They will also identify the various parts of each (stem, skin, seeds).
- Students will cut open the pumpkins and apples to explore the seeds. They will describe the seeds in terms of
number, shape, texture, size, weight, and color.
- Students will compare the various features of pumpkins and apples in order to identify similarities and differences.
- Lastly, the students will identify items that can be made from pumpkins and apples (i.e. apple pie, pumpkin pie, and apple cider) and they will have the opportunity to taste various items.
