Rosie's Walk
by Pat Hutchins
Aladdin Paperbacks, Simon & Schuster, 1968
Concepts and Themes To Teach
- Note: Several pages of the book are pictures only, which will require verbal description by the reader. The character of the fox is not included in the text. Make sure to describe what happens to the fox in each situation.
- Note: The pictures are abstract which may not allow for clear identification by children with low vision.
-
- Haystack
- Mill
- Fence
- Beehives
Expanded Core Curriculum Skills and Activities
Compensatory Skills
- Haystack: use straw instead of hay as it generally contains less allergens. (check regarding hay allergies with parents before activity). Practice piling the loose straw by raking. Once piled, the child can jump in. Multiple jumps will cause the straw to spread out again. Begin raking again. Can also do activity with leaves if no straw is available.
Orientation and Mobility
- Create an obstacle course. Use chairs, and couch cushions. Use words like, "under", "around", "over", "past", and "through".
- Expand on the walking concept
Walk in different directions: forward, sideways, backwards
Walk in different paths: straight, crooked, zigzag
- Discuss the physical land characteristics described in the book: yard and pond.
- Introduce cardinal directions: go for a walk outside, locate 4 objects which can be in close proximity to the child, such as on a playground. Identify for the child what direction they are facing. Ask them what they see/feel in front of them? Turn a different direction and ask again? Assist the child to turn and face all four directions.
- Have the child draw four pictures or dictate what they saw in each direction. For example, the north picture may read, "I saw a tree. Or, have child draw the pictures on a larger piece of paper. Mark the cardinal directions on their large "map.
- Make a visual or tactile map of Rosie’s walk. Include the landmarks mentioned in the book: pond, mill, fence, beehives
Social Interaction
- After reading the story, discuss the interactions between Rosie and the fox. Are they friends?
Recreation & Leisure
- Use blocks to build the path that Rosie took. After building the path, use a small toy chicken to recreate the walk.
