Expanded Core Curriculum Activities

Compensatory Skills

  • Act out the story

Use 5 small plastic ducks with a black background or a blue placemat, reenact the story removing the ducks.  Can attach Velcro to the bottom of the ducks to make them more stable, then they can be attached to a headliner fabric board.

  • Listen for the mother duck.

Select one child to be the mother duck.  Blindfold children if needed (or encourage them to keep eyes closed).  The “mother duck” should quack.  The children should try to find their mother by sound alone.

Recreation & Leisure

  • Let the child explore and wear swimming flippers.  Explain how these are like duck feet.
  • Play the game "Lucky Ducks"

Visual Efficiency Skills

  • Tracking and scanning skills: use small plastic ducks described above, arranged in a line.  Have the child point to each in a left to right motion.  Begin tracking again after the removal of each duck.

  • Use die-cuts on the light box.  Arrange the die-cuts and laminate, so that the story can be told removing a single page at a time.  Can use a negative die-cut if necessary.  This method can be used for any book that has a significant simple-shaped character.

Self-determination

  • Discuss what is happening to the ducks, how the mother duck feels when they are gone and when they return
