Objective: Students will master the ability to hear, identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words
The following is one example of materials used to make curricular adaptations to meet curricular objectives.
Using a card reader, students can recognize that letters represent sounds. Place an enlarged print letter on the card. Place the card into the card reader and record the correlating sound to the letter. Students may hear the sound, word or sentences recorded on the card numerous times. You may adhere picture symbols, textured objects or real objects onto the cards. Students with multiple disabilities may access the card reader by activating a single switch. You must plug the card reader into an environmental control unit to allow switch access.
Students can build a picture, letter, or word bank for each unit. Each student can store their own individual bank on a binder ring to hang in a central location within the classroom such as "Word Wall. " Each time the student masters the picture, letter, word or sentence, that card should be added to the students ring. This will be a visible record of known letters, sounds, phonemes etc..
